Hard acts of care
On an immersive tour of quirky façades from Saint Gilles we get to observe what is happening behind some of the windows: animated kinky queer people having fun. It is a cartoonesque interpretation of cute individuals engaging in hard acts of care.
The necessity of telling these stories emerges, not only from a proxemics problem (we are small and attached to the ground), but from the societal long tradition in oppressing our bodies and therefore our desires. Sex is mostly filtered, happening with the doors and curtains closed. So the project offers an outlook to queer intimacy as an important aspect of queer life. However: sex is as serious as it is not, hence every micro episode is told with a glint of shy sharp humor.
Valeriu Andrișcă is a Romanian visual artist based in Brussels. His work includes a collection of videopoems, illustrations, short-short films, and a recent mid length animation. His art practice emerges from the consistent passion for the moving image, cinema as an institution but also its rebellious descendants, combined with the technical skills acquired in a studio for graphic & motion design. He navigates topics around queerness, alienation, immigration and resistance.
Valeriu is in a continuous exploration of new shapes and possibilities to express post-modern visual narratives. He believes that, with the increased technological progress, we will need to reclaim our existence and get representation in all the new invented spaces (think of VR, games and other hybrid configurations to come). At the same time, as we step into a tech-bro-ruled universe it is crucial to find alternative ways to create and put resistance at the core of the process. These cardboard glasses (courtesy of Martin Landmeters) are a first attempt of an artisanal, more organic artistic approach.
The project was created during a one month residency at The Green Corridor. The artist would like to thank Juan Duque and Sam De Vocht.
